T.R. Doongaji hails from Nagpur, the place where Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata started his first venture, Empress Mills, in 1877. At the age of 6 years of age, Doongaji's cousin would take him to the temple. Before entering the building, he'd ask the young man to bow his head to a bust that was of "the founder" placed on the pedestal. "I did what he asked me to," declares Doongaji. "Today, I realise that my entire identity is this name." A J.N. Tata academic, he served 52 years (42 in executive roles) as a member of the Tata Group which included the managing director of three group companies.Jamsetji created a provisional scheme for his employees. It was the first of this type in India and also an accidental compensation fund.Ratan Tata spearheaded the group's global pursuits. Not just the huge-ticket purchases and investments, but also an intelligent expansion that leveraged the strengths of Tata Group.

In the past certain politicians in Nagpur were in the process of changing the name of the convocation hall of Nagpur University, the J.N. Tata Hall, to a local leader's name. The friend of Nagpur called Doongaji, asking whether he was aware of it. Doongaji looked into archives of the Tata Central Archives to see how the hall came to be given the name. "We found there was evidence that Empress Mills Nagpur had contributed to the construction of the hall and we have all the information. We recently prevailed in that instance in the High Court. I will not allow anybody to do anything in Tata's image or <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Property">property</a>," Says an elated Parsi.

A few businesses can boast this kind of loyalty from their workers. In addition, Doongaji attributes it to the management that is the Tata Group. "Between the founder and Cyrus [Mistry], there have been four chairmen--three were knighted and one is a Bharat Ratna," states Doongaji. "How many groups are able to claim that quality of leadership?

It all began when Jamsetji purchased a ten-acre plot of marshy property from the Nagpur King and set up Empress Mills. (It was registered at Bombay in 1874 as Central India Spinning, Weaving and Manufacturing Company Limited. Jamsetji had started trading company in 1868.)

Jamsetji did not want his workers to be working in the squalid conditions that the The cotton mills of Lancashire. Thus at Empress Mills, he ensured adequate ventilation and put in an apparatus set up to humidify air. Sprinklers were set up to lessen damage from accidental fires. The entrepreneur also set up an insurance scheme for provident funds that was which was the first one in India and also an accident compensation fund for accidents.

The moment that Jamsetji was back in Bombay He had earned enough money and he turned his attention towards purchasing property. In the next few years, he was one of the wealthiest men in the country. While visiting the US at the request of the industrialist George Westinghouse, Jamsetji saw the hydroelectric power project in the Niagara Falls. Jamsetji had been planning a hydroelectric project in India and the trip to America firmed it up. It was in the Lonavala and Khandala regions located in the Western Ghats, which gets one of the heaviest rainfalls anywhere in the world, and is blessed with the perfect combination of soil, valleys and slopes, he started the work for the Tata Hydroelectric Supply Company. Massive pipes pushed water to the bottom of the mountain at Khopoli which, when it reached the powerhouse the water would be transformed to electrical energy. This venture proved to be an event-changing one, as it powered the city that was growing in Bombay.

Tata Hydroelectric Supply Company was established as a public company on the 7th of November in 1910. The company was officially launched the following day, February 11, 1915, when Lord Willingdon, the governor of Bombay officially opened it. "Today, the major chunk of our power is being supplied to industries, hospitals and residences," declares Rajesh G. Naik, director of operations and maintenanceat Tata Power. The total capacity of the plant is 447mw.

One of the main attractions at the project is the 14-acre garden in Lonavala. Jamsetji was an avid enthusiast in gardening and brought home seeds and plants from all over the world. As the steel plant in Jamshedpur was in the process of being built and he wrote a lengthy note to his son Dorabji about the rapidly growing variety of trees that he wanted him to plant on the site. Said Vivek Vishwasrao, head of biodiversity at Tata Power: "We fall in the northern portion of the Western Ghats which is a major bio-diversity hotspot. Some of the species of plants, animals and birds we find here are not found anywhere in the world." Similar to the gorgeous Tata Baug, built in 1891, on 22 acres in Navsari It is run by Dr. Rohinton Avari. He has a doctoral degree in landscape gardening.

Jamsetji had been An "omnivorous reader", and is a huge fan of Dickens and Thackeray. "He was fond of driving, a good judge of horseflesh, and was pleased with the quality of his horses, whether Arabs, English Hackneys or Hungarians and of his professional turnout. Sometimes, he was a fan of boating and sailing, and entertaining his guests at picnics," writes Frank Harris in his book Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata: A Story Of His Lives.

When it comes to 'firsts but, Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy's achievements stand out. From getting India's first pilot's licence to starting the first cancer center in the country, J.R.D. Tata set the stage for a better India. He was the son of R.D. Tata, was a nephew of Jamsetji's mother. He also had the mother of Jamsetji, Suzanne Briere, a French citizen. He was born in Paris and spent his early years in France. After his father's death, the son of his father became a director at Tata Sons at the age of 22.

J.R.D. became J.R.D. Tata Sons chairman in 1938 at the age of 34. The company had 14 businesses that time. When he stepped down in 1991 the number of companies was 95. But his contributions went well further than Tata Group and its businesses. For example, he was instrumental in helping Homi Bhabha set up India's Atomic Energy Programme. The most prominent of the businesses J.R.D. founded included Tata Airlines (which later became Air India), as it quickly earned a world-wide recognition as one of the best carriers. "J.R.D. would always say that Air India was his first love, and I would hope to hear him affirm"that Tata Steel was his second," says J.J. Irani, who was the managing director of Tata Steel. "He would laugh at that, but he never gave me an answer."
